What to Expect in Your First Counseling Session
Starting therapy can feel like a big step-and not knowing what to expect often makes it harder. Whether you’re new to counseling or returning after time away, your first session sets the foundation for your healing journey.
What Happens in the First Session?
Think of it as a “getting to know you” session. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, your background, and what you hope to gain from therapy. You’ll also go over confidentiality, policies, and any questions you have.
This session is not about solving everything at once. It’s about building trust and understanding your story.
How to Prepare
You don’t need to have it all figured out. Just come with an open mind and a willingness to share at your own pace. Some people find it helpful to jot down a few notes about what they want help with-but it’s okay if you just show up.
A Safe Space to Begin
